They follow strict traditions and customs. The society is rigidly patriarchal were women never outrank a man and encourages behaviour to that of a warrior.

Xenophobic tendencies among them as they wear gloves when touching aliens. Removing the gloves and touching someone with their bare hands is a sign of affection and respect.

Being very competitive; games, tests and competitions are an important part of their society, and the children are encouraged in contests and challenges, sharing victory is an important part of the games, Furthermore, when undertaking the tests, pain is not a consideration only passing is important.

The practice of bowing is seen as a sign of respect, when meeting a close relative, the bowing is extended by the touching of arms and gently pressing foreheads.

When a Talarian boy has reached the age of 14, he undergoes the Age of Decision which involves a ceremony of initiation and then have the freedom to make their own choices.

The Talarian ritual of mourning or B'Nar which consists of a high-pitched shriek and rocking back and forth when in distress.

Teenage Talarians listen to loud, electronic music similar to that of Rock and roll called Alba Ra.

Talarians ride T'stayans which are very strong, six-hoofed animals native to the homeworld.

They often have trouble sleeping on their Human beds as it hurts their backs and prefer hammocks. Talarian men often wore full beards, young and old, wore a short thin braid of hair, originating between the two hairless lobes at the back of their head.

There were a number of small skirmishes with the United Federation of Planets, most notably the Galen Border Conflicts which lasted until 2356.

Twelve years later, a Federation vessel discovered a small Talarian craft adrift in Sector 21947. The craft had developed a serious radiation leak in the propulsion system. The survivors were evacuated which included a Human youth. Soon after a Talarian warship along with two sister warships, intercepted and surrounded the Federation vessel in trying to recover the adoptive son of one of the commanders. An armed conflict thankfully was averted when the captain of the Federation vessel return the Commander's adoptive son to the Talarians.

Technology and militia

In 2367, their military capability is inferior to that of the Federation, consisting of neutral particle weapons, X-ray lasers, and merculite rockets, and don't represent serious tactical threat to a galaxy class starship. They also used subspace proximity detonators and self-destruct devices that were installed on their ships.

Attacking a superior officer is considered the highest offence and is punishable by execution usually by the offended officer.

Their uniforms reflect their culture. The officers and boys having passed their Age of Decision wore a similar brown padded uniform-vest and black trousers. Large black helmets and black leather gloves are a standard part of the uniform, and a ribbed silvery-black undergarment was worn under the brown vest. Large rifles are worn on a shoulder strap on the right side of the body.

Golden insignia are worn on the right side of their uniform vest; two different kinds were observed: captains and senior officers wore badges with rounded ends, where young Talarians wore badges with pointed triangular ends. Additionally, only captains wore a second golden insignia, consisting of three diamond-shaped metal pieces positioned centrally on the chest.

Alliances

Alrakis Pact

Main article: Alrakis Pact

The Talarians could not win a war against the Federation or its other neighbors, the Tzenkethi. Nor did they have the manpower to expand far beyond its borders. The human Jono, now a Captain, used his influence with the Empire to convince them to let him talk to the Federation. His experience aboard the Enterprise gave him great insight on one of the giants who stood fast during the war with the fierce soldiers from the Gamma Quadrant. An exchange program could be created, enabling the Empire to learn from this Federation.

Other Talarians disagreed with Captain Jono's initiative, and it was these Talarians that welcomed a Breen delegation months later. Captain Ronzel, a powerful member of the Empire, saw an opportunity. It considered the Tzenkethi and the Breen as equals, as they favored tactics over technology, yet they also had the technology to back those tactics. Allying with the Breen would enable the Talarians to show their true power and finally demand respect from the Federation. No longer would they be considered inferior. Now, they would be equals.

This was why, in early 2389, the Talarians joined the Tzenkethi Coalition and the Breen Confederacy is forming the Alrakis Pact.
