The Bolians are a humanoid species that resides on the planet known as Bolarus IX and are members of the Federation. They have blue skin and are often outspoken even at the worse of times.
Physiology
Bolians have a ridge that runs vertically down the middle of their head and face to halfway down their chest. Bolian males are effectively bald and are often as tall as the average Human male and are not often involved in physical activity. Bolian females are sometimes bald and on occasion have hair. There have been occasions where male Bolians were toupees.
They also have a similar ridge on their tongues that allow them to eat foods that most other Federation races are able to like strong acids. An example of Bolian cuisine which would not be palatable to most races is the consumption of meat that has partially decayed.
The blood of a Bolian when it is removed is blue. Vulcan blood cannot be used as it would result in the Bolian's death. when there are no artificial blood available, existing blood has to be genetically altered to allow for transfusions between species. Intimate relations between a Bolian and a Human can cause discomfort to the latter involving fatigue, nausea and joint pain.
Also, the heart of a Bolian is on the right side of their body.
History and Politics
The Bolians had limited contact with the Ferengi and by 2366 had an uneasy truce with the Moropa.
By the 24th Century, the Bolians were associated with the Federation, with a number of their officers serving in Starfleet during the 2360s with an active Federation ambassador by 2369.
Their territory was used a front during the Dominion War. Established by the Federation's sixth fleet in 2374 to prevent the Dominion from taking the Bolarus system and its colonies. Starfleet developed a new strategy called the Bolian Operation.
Society and Culture
They approved of euthanasia stating that assisted suicide was justified if the action had the principal effect of relieving suffering even though the secondary effect was causing death.
Due to the "good nature" perceived in Bolians they are often found in service type roles as a barber for example.
Courtship rituals involves a male and female Bolian pressing foreheads with their eyes closed while both of them touch the neck of their partner with both hands placing their fingers where one would check for the pulse. Their marriages often involve more than two members and any additional spouse is called a "co-husband" or "co-wife". It is further believed that if one gives birth near a warp core, the experinece improved the disposition of the child.
Economy and Trade
The Bank of Bolias is the primary institute of finance for the Bolians and many of those off-world. The fluctuations in their currency play an important role in Alpha Quadrant trade.
The Bolians were among a number of Federation races that took advantage of Deep Space 9 and the Bajoran wormhole. Their vessels frequently conducted trade through the station during the 2370s being victim to Maquis attacks on a number of occasions.
